NGL; Nice Girls Finish Last

By

Nice Girls Lie

They lie about everything;

They lie about what they’re feeling.

They lie about who they are.

They lie about what they really mean.

They lie about the reason behind their viewpoints and standpoints.

And most especially, they lie about their likes and dislikes.

I do not want to be a nice girl.

I do not want to finish last.

I want to disrupt the status quo

I want to light a fire in the bellies of the generation coming after us.

I want to be a voice for those who were taught not to have one.

Because nice girls don’t have voices.

They say what they think you want to hear,

They smooth the edges,

They soften the truth.

And if I’m being honest…

I’m not a nice girl.

I try to care about people’s feelings. I really do. But deep down, I don’t care enough to betray the truth… My truth.

Here’s the kicker

I’ve been conditioned by society to make myself more palatable.

To shrink certain parts of myself.

To fit neatly into the box created for women who look like me and come from the same socioeconomic background.

But that box?

It’s uncomfortable.

It’s I’ll-fitting.

And it’s not me.

So to hell with your labels.

I don’t want to be put in a box.

I’m done biting my tongue.

And you best believe I’m not cushioning the blow of truth anymore.

My job is to make me stronger.

To help me see my potential.

To make me realize who I am and what I am capable of becoming.

Earlier today I was trying to map out my life, and I chuckled at the possibility of something more.

But I believe something different.

I believe I have the strength to overcome any adversity the moment I stop caring about what people will think of me.

So no.

I refuse to be a nice girl.

I refuse to keep up with this charade.

And I refuse to betray my truth.

I’ll leave myself, and you with this quote:

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure…” — Marianne Williamson

So here’s our exercise for today.

Let’s do one thing that frightens us.

That thing we’ve been holding back from doing because of what people might think?

Do it.

And watch how bright our light will begin to shine.
